METEOR identifier: | 657011 |
Registration status: | Health!, Standard 17/08/2017 |
Description: | Number and percentage of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who claimed 1 or more relevant cardiac-related Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS) diagnostic items within a 12-month period, compared with non-Indigenous Australians. |
Rationale: | This measure falls within Priority area 2 of the Better Cardiac Care project—timely diagnosis of heart disease and heart failure. This priority area is based on the premise that all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people suspected of having heart disease or heart failure should receive the appropriate initial diagnostic service (for example, stress testing or coronary angiography for ischaemic heart disease, echocardiography for heart failure and rheumatic heart disease, or other investigations as clinically indicated), as close to the patient’s home as possible, and within acceptable timeframes according to the level of risk and the patient’s condition. |
