Computation description: | (Interim) Performance indicator is restricted to DS NMDS service users aged 0– 64 years with an informal carer. Support services to assist in the caring role are defined in ‘Reported disaggregation’ below. |
Computation: | R/N x 100 (Interim) where R = number of DS NMDS service users aged 0–64 years with an informal carer, where the service user accessed services to assist the carer in their caring role in the reporting period and N = number of DS NMDS service users aged 0–64 years with an informal carer in the reporting period. |
Numerator: | (Interim) Number of disability support service users aged 0–64 years with an informal carer, where the service user accessed services to assist the carer in their caring role, in the reporting period. |

Further data development / collection required: | The NDIMG has committed to further work to develop a more broadly based (population) measure of support services for carers. Data development may involve data linkage across administrative data sets. (Interim) Classifications proposed above are appropriate for the current CSTDA/DS NMDS. Classifications will need to be reviewed in line with any future changes to the NMDS. Note that the existing DS NMDS counts people with informal carers; it does not count carers. The National Disability Data Network has identified improved carer data as a priority area for NMDS redevelopment. Use of DS NMDS data in the interim only provides a proxy measure for this indicator. |
Other issues caveats: | Available disaggregation depends on sampling errors and other caveats. Cells with numerator counts less than 5 will be suppressed. Information about the Indigenous status of the carer, the country of birth of the carer and the remoteness of the carer is not available from the DS NMDS. Service users with age in the range 0 to 64 years and service users with ‘not stated’ age are included in calculations for this indicator. Service users with age reported to be 65 years or older are not included. Treatment of ‘not stated’ values within disaggregations: Carer age group (years): Subtotal includes carers with known age only. Total includes carers with ‘not stated’ age. Carer sex: Subtotal includes carers with known sex only (derived from carer relationship to service user). Total includes carers for whom sex could not be derived. Carer primary status: Subtotal includes carers with known carer primary status only. Total includes carers with ‘not stated’ carer primary status. Carer residency status: Subtotal includes carers with known carer residency status only. Total includes carers with ‘not stated’ carer residency status. |
