In the DS NMDS, the need for interpreter services, along with the type of the service required by the service user, is collected in one question using the following codes: 1 Yes—for spoken language other than English 2 Yes—for non-spoken communication 3 No 9 Not stated If a person communicates with the assistance of a signer (i.e. not necessarily arranged by your agency) they should be recorded as 2 'Yes – for non-spoken communication’. The data element 'Person—communication method, code N', provides the opportunity to indicate the use of sign language and the level of effective communication of the service user. |
