Computation: | Infants: 1,000 x (Numerator ÷ Denominator)
Children: 100,000 x (Numerator ÷ Denominator) Total 0–4 year olds: 100,000 x (Numerator ÷ Denominator) Calculated separately for each of the three age groups, and for All Australians, Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians. Infant mortality rate is presented per 1,000 live births. Child mortality rates are presented per 100,000 population. |

Further data development / collection required: | Specification: Long-term
Indigenous identification needs improvement in mortality and births data and the underlying Indigenous population estimates also need improvement. |
Other issues caveats: | Disaggregation by Indigenous status, remoteness area and SEIFA of residence within individual states/territories is subject to data quality considerations. Some disaggregations may result in numbers too small for publication.
Disaggregation by Indigenous status is to be reported using a 3 or 5 year rolling average. Further details (including data for 2002–06) are available from the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Performance Framework (Indicator 1.19). <http://www.aihw.gov.au/publications/ihw/aatsihpf08r-da/atsihpf08r-c01-19.pdf |
